Day +1487 : Adriel registered for ballet class

I am fine today.

Adriel like to dance. She requested me to send her to ballet class many months ago. I was not very sure if she was really serious about it or it is just a momentary burst of enthusiasm (hangat-hangat tahi ayam), so I was holding a wait-and-see approach.

"When are you going to send me to ballet class?" she kept on reminding me about this, and sometime she accused me for not acting upon her request and said, "you never send me to ballet class."

Seeing that she is quite persistent on this, my wife and I decided to give her a try and registered her for the lesson this morning

The centre, Dances Allegro (启点舞蹈艺术学院), is located in Bandar Puteri and it was introduced to me by a church member who send her daughter to the centre as well.

The monthly fee for the entry level is RM55 per month for a 45 minutes group lesson per week. The costume cost RM148. Together with the registration fee, deposit and first month of lesson fee, I paid RM238.

I hope Adriel will be happy dancing :-)

Day +1485 : No catch

I am fine today.

There is no catch today as expected. The rats were frightened and dare not come :-)

They will come in about 3 months and the trap is ever ready for them.

See you next post :-)

Day +1484 : More catches

I am fine today.

My fixed line telephone was without dial tone since a few weeks ago. I complained to Telekom and their technician found out that there was some internal wiring problem. I was told that I need to engage a wiring contractor to do rectification work.

I have been wondering why the telephone wiring was having problem suddenly. And the culprit was identified yesterday morning when the maid pointed to us a broken cable near the telephone. We believed it was eaten by rats :-)

In an urgent effort to trap the rats to prevent more cables being eaten, I purchased a can of rat glue and a cage trap yesterday and the result was very good - one trapped by the glue and the other one in the cage :-)

As I mentioned in my blog Day +1395 : Catching rats – the catch, rat is cleverer than mouse. After seeing their "comrades" struggling in the traps, they should not come again tonight. But anyway we set the trap again just in case anyone in the group tried to be heroes and visited us again.

The unfortunate one that ended up in the cage

Day +1483 : My tears

I am fine today.

I have no tears and thus have to rely heavily on artificial tears.

My eyes accept one type of artificial tears - Tears Naturale Free. I have to bring it along wherever I go.

I ordered 20 boxes of Tears Naturale Free with a cost of RM558 (RM27.90 each) two weeks ago. This amount of tears will last for 3 months.

You have tears, so if you take my condition as a reference, you save RM558 every three months :-)

Day +1482 : 15% rebate is too hard to resist

I am fine today.

Richard and I went to Public Bank to sign some documents a few months. We were persuaded to sign up a new credit card after signing the document.

The bank offered 15% rebate for purchase paid with the card. Furthermore, the bank gave RM60 rebate to compensate the RM50 government tax if we manage to use the card for at least one transaction within certain period of time.

We didn't believe that the bank is able to give 15% rebate. Further inquiries revealed that the the 15% rebate is only applicable if we purchase certain category of goods in certain day of the week. For example, purchasing Petrol on Monday, groceries on Sunday, medicine on Wednesday etc.

I spent an average of RM200 on groceries each week and if I can discipline myself to purchase them on Sunday, then I will be saving RM30 each purchase :-)

With this consideration, I signed up for the card.

A few weeks later, the bank changed rebate rate, reducing it to 10% but for all spending regardless of what you purchase on which day.

This again seems to be very attractive but further inquiries reveal that the rebate is in fact works in the following way:

Single transaction expenses
  • RM100 to RM299 - RM10 rebate.
  • RM300 to RM499 - RM 30 rebate
  • RM500 to RM999 - RM 55 rebate
  • > RM1000 - RM120
Maximum rebate per calender month is only RM 150.00

Looking at the way it works, most of the time the rebate is less than 10%. If you spend something below RM100, you won't get any rebate at all. So if your bill is RM90, it is better to top up with a item that cost RM10, so that you can get RM10 rebate.

The other day I shopped at TESCO and the bill was RM280. With this amount, the rebate is RM10 only. I asked the casher to hold on and quickly go and grabbed a bag of rice that cost more than RM20 and with this, I get extra RM20 rebate :-)

However, one thing that makes most customers unable to enjoy the rebate is that the bank never informs the card holder that there is a change of rebate plan. Worst still, the card holder needs to re-register through sms to enjoy the rebate. I believe no one will be so free to call the bank every day to check for the rebate. So the bank will be able to avoid paying rebate very soon after a customer signing up the card. That is the trick!

Anyway, if a card holder can make sure that he/she is in the rebate plan, then signing up for the card definitely has its advantage :-)

See you next post :-)

Day +1481 : Lunch with my third brother, Sie Hai

I am fine today.

My third brother, Sie Hai, is a Petronas staff working as an operator for Asean Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd in Bintulu.

The company is upgrading its Yokogawa distributed control system. He came to Yokogawa office in Puchong for two weeks training and stock check.

I invited him for a lunch at Cheong Wah Seafood Restaurant after the church service. Having lunch together with us were 5 of my nephews and nieces.

Day +1480 : More stories on Internet scam

I am fine today.

A girl in Kuching, Sarawak made friend with a guy from UK through online chatting. One day, the guy wanted to fly to Kuching to visit her, and at the same time, looking for investment opportunities there.

The girl was cheated RM2000 in the end. Losing money might not be a huge problem as the amount is not very big. I believe she could always earn back the money, but the motional hurt and self-blaming will haunt her for a long time. She might no be able to trust people anymore.

Are you a Facebook fan? Please read the following articles about Facebook scam if you are.

Stay alert all the time and never give money without really sure what is happening. Another way to protect you is to always share the happening like this to your family members and friends. They might be able to offer some good advice on how to deal with the situation.

Day +1479 : Almost get cheated by Internet scam (4/4)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday...

You see, he blamed me for playing game and I did apologised, but requested to talk to him through Skype. I could see Professor Yap was on Skype and his location is Perth, Australia, not London. I would like to see how he would response to my request.
Sorry about this. I am willing to help and in fact already withdraw RM12,000 cash. I went to withdraw last night and this morning.

Are you on Skype? Perhaps, we can have a chat through Skype.
And the reply was a follow.
As you know that i don't have my computer here,i am using someone computer to write you but if you can help me to send it no problem.

I already sent you the details to use when sending it via western union but you never want to help me out that is why you asking all this...I am unhappy where i am now in a big distress...i can't write you again.. Thank you for all your effort and time..bye

Professor Yap
I knew I should conclude the game now and sent him the last email as follow. I didn’t receive any reply from him after that :-)
I managed to talk to Professor Yap through Skype. He is in Perth, Australia now. How can he be in London at the same time?

Only one is real? Which one? The one in Perth or the one in London?

When I made up a story saying that

Because when I was sick, you came to visit me and compose a very nice song to encourage me. Do you still remember about this?

And at one period of time when nobody else could come to hospital to take care of me, you and your wife stay in the hospital many nights to take care of me. I don't know if you still remember all these kind works that you had done towards me.

And your reply is
I could still remember all those time...

How can you remember something that didn't happen? What a joke!

And you said that you were with your friend who has a computer, then why don't you ask your friend for help? Why you need to mass email to everybody to ask for help.

You said you can't call me because you didn't have money but you have a friend with you, why don't you ask your friend to call me?

You are unhappy and distress because your trick doesn't work, isn't it?

I referred this case to Crime Investigation Division London Police Service. Run, quickly, run, run, run...

Have a good run!

Day +1478 : Almost get cheated by Internet scam (3/4)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday...

And the reply from the hacker was a brief one as follow:
Dear David,

Thank you for your reply.here is the hotel phone number +447961578272 room 204. I could still remember all those time... Kindly send the cash as soon as posssible today and let me know. I will be expecting your call.

Professor Yap
The interesting thing that is worth to mention here is that he said “I could still remember all those time...” :-) And in fact those thing never happens.

I continued the game by replying as follow.
Dear Professor Yap,

Can you please let me know the hotel name?

I have the cash ready.

David

And I was given the hotel name.
The name of the hotel is London Euston Travel Inn. Try to call me as soon as possible because i will soon be leaving for a class. Waiting to read from you soon.

Professor Yap
I googled and found out that the telephone number was not belong to the hotel. I replied as follow.
I called the London Euston Travel Inn Address: 141 Euston Road London, NW1 2AU Tel: 00 44 (0) 870 238 3301. There is one one called David Yap staying there.
I didn’t call in fact. Now the hacker was getting impatience and replied as follow.
I am at there annex and i gave you the number to call +447961578272 room 204. If you can't help me let me know not all this games you are try to play...well thank you for your time.

Day +1477 : Almost get cheated by Internet scam (2/4)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday...

With the intention to help, I replied as follow.
Dear Professor Yap,

I am so sorry to hear about this. I am having some infection - sore throat, flu and coughing. As a post bone marrow transplant Leukaemia patient, I am more susceptible to infection but don't worry, I am generally fine.

I believe I can lend you the full amount but is it possible for you to call me just to verify that this is from you? Sorry for that, I am just a little bit cautious.

You do can send me the details.

God bless!

David
After sending out the email, I searched the Internet and found out that someone in fact reported receiving mail almost exactly the same as this one. This made me concluded that the mail was not from Professor Yap though the sender email is belong to him and the return path for the email is also correct. His email account must be hacked and the hacker sent out the mail to call for assistance to everyone that Professor Yap had contacted.

I received the reply.
Dear David,

Thank you for your concern and help,i should have call you but my cell phone can't work here and i don't have any cash on me to call at a pay phone, how are you feeling now with your health?hope you are getting better? You will send the money via Western Union Money Transfer using the details below for the transfer:

Name:David Yap
Address: 141 Euston Street
London, NW12AU
England

Kindly help me to send it as soon as possible and once you have it sent, send me the money transfer control number(Mtcn) with full details of the transfer or attach receipt to me.

I wait to read from you as soon as you have it sent today.

Professor Yap
The hacker changed the signature from David Yap to Professor Yap because I addressed him as Professor Yap.

I responded to his mail and made up a story and see how he would response :-)
Dear Professor Yap,

I understand your situation and sorry for replying late as I went to sleep after replying to your urgent mail last night. I am most happy to help you.

In fact I always find opportunity to help you and I believe this is the best chance for me to reward you for your kindness

Can you give me your hotel contact? The name of the hotel and also your room number. I will call you. Apart from this, I will also like to tell you that the manuscript for the latest song that you pass to me got a serious discrepancy which can only be resolved through the telephone conversation. If we didn't do this, than the publication might be seriously delayed and thus affect our investment.

I will redraw money today and most probably will be able to bank in immediately after receiving your reply.

Hope to hear from you soon.

God bless you!

In Christ,

David Ting

Day +1476 : Almost get cheated by Internet scam (1/4)

I am fine today.

I received an urgent email yesterday from Professor David Yap(叶志明教授) saying that he was in London attending a conference but somehow lost his wallet. Then he said he needed 2,400 Pounds and requested for my help; transferring whatever amount that I could afford through Western Union Money Transfer.

The email reads as follow:
Hello,

How are you doing? Hope all is well with you and I pray this email finds you in good health. I am sorry that I didn’t tell you about me leaving for this Conference here in England.

I really hate to ask you but I need favor from you because i misplaced my wallet on my way to the hotel where my money and other valuable things were kept.I really need a loan urgently. I will be needing the sum of 2,400 Pounds to sort-out my hotel bills and get myself back home.

I will appreciate whatever you can afford to help me with, i'll pay you back as soon as i return. Kindly let me know if you can be of help? so that i can send you the details to use when sending the money through Western Union Money Transfer.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

David Yap
I met Professor David Yap in the 20th World Association of Chinese Church Music conference not long ago and I respected him a lot.

I told my wife that I must help him and would like to lend him the full amount; withdrawing cash and transfer to him the money the next day.

Day +1475 : Sore throat subsided, cough and flu set in

I am fine today.

Zhithromax is quite effective, the sore throat subsided significantly after two doses only. After taking another dose tomorrow morning, the course is completed and I believe it should eradicate the sore throat completely.

But now the cough and flu set in with itchiness felt in the left lung :-( Based on previous experience, the traditional Chinese medicine is quite effective for the cough and flu, so I will be seeing the traditional Chinese doctor if the condition worsen.

My latest approach is - fight sore throat with western medicine and combat cough and flu with Chinese medicine; a combination of the east and the west (中西合拼)to achieve the best :-)

See you next post :-)

Day +1474 : Sore throat intensified, starting Zithromax

I am fine today.

After a course of Erythromycin that ended about a week ago, my sore throat problem was almost gone but unfortunately, it came again, and intensifying over time until I have to see a doctor this morning before going to church.

I went to Dr. Koh's clinic which is normally open on Sunday but found out that it was closed. I searched and ended up in Mediviron Clinic Puchong Jaya, and this time I was prescribed 3-days course of Zithromax; a second line antibiotic such as Augmentin.

I was charged RM72. It is way more expensive than a normal consultation because the Zhithromax alone cost RM50.

Hopefully the sore throat will be totally eradicated after this course of antibiotics; else I have to extend the antibiotic intake for another 3 days.

See you next post :-)

Day +1473 : Wedding dinner at Dynasty Dragon Seafood Restaurant

I am fine today.

My wife and I attended my colleague, Mr. Lau Wei Nam’s, wedding dinner at Dynasty Dragon Seafood Restaurant (皇龙) this evening. The restaurant is located in the new wing of the IOI mall. This is the first time ever we have meal in this restaurant.

Almost all colleagues turned up for the happy event and not only this, many ex-colleagues attended the dinner as well. Both the food and environment are nice :-)

We wish the couple happy marriage and also enjoy a happy marriage life forever :-)

Day +1472 : Tesco vouchers

I am fine today.

TESCO is aggressive in marketing and I particularly like their Clubcard points system where Clubcard members are rewarded one Clubcard point every RM2 spent. Each Clubcard point will be converted to 1 cent and thus for every 100 points (RM200 spent), we get RM1 cash voucher. Since we earn 1 point only every RM2, so the percentage of cash back is 0.05%.

This seems to be very low but getting a Tesco RHB Credit Card and charge the transaction to it will double the point earned which increase the cash back percentage to 1%.

But the advantage of Tesco RHB Credit Card doesn't stop here. The bank will give 2% cash back for all purchase done in TESCO outlets. With this, the effective cash back is now increased to 3% :-)

However, if you think that 2% cash back is too little, then you can make purchase using the Tesco RHB Credit Card during the last weekend of the month where the cash back is increased from 2% to 5%. If you can discipline yourself to purchase only on the last weekend of month, then the effective cash back will be 6% :-)

In addition to this, you will also be able to earn Clubcard points elsewhere (non Tesco outlets) which carries the rate of one point for every RM2 spent.

I was rewarded RM36 cash vouchers from March to May.

The voucher

The total points earned and how I earned them; take note of the significant contribution from RHB TESCO Credit Card

Day +1471 : Everything BEN 10

I am fine today.

Aaron likes BEN 10 very much. If you don't know what is BEN 10, the following description from Wikipedia should provide you some idea of what it is.
Ben 10 is an American animated series created by "Man of Action" (a group consisting of Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle), and produced by Cartoon Network Studios. It is the first series in the Ben 10 franchise. The pilot episode aired on December 27, 2005, as part of a sneak peek of Cartoon Network's Saturday morning lineup. The second episode was shown as a special on Cartoon Network's Fridays on January 13, 2006. The final regular episode aired on April 15, 2008. The theme song for the show was written by Andy Sturmer and sung by Moxy.[1] In April 2008, Ben 10 was succeeded by Ben 10: Alien Force, which itself was succeeded in April 2010 by Ben 10: Ultimate Alien.

Aaron watched a lot of BEN 10 and now he likes to wear BEN 10 singlet, BEN 10 watch, BEN 10 slipper, BEN 10 school bag....

Day +1470 : Now AirAsia can simply re-time the flight but you bear the cost

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday from Richard.

-------------------------------------------------

I am a faithful AirAsia passenger/supporter since year 2002 when it had only 4 aircrafts. At that time, if I changed the flight from the expensive one to a cheaper one, I could get the refund of the difference, credited to my credited card.

But a few months later, AirAsia imposed a rule that a passenger was only allowed to change to a flight with a fare equal or more expensive than the original one. This made the auto refund case never happen again.

Today if you have booked a flight but at the end you want to re-time it, you need to bear the cost because you are the one who make "mistake”, and most of the time, the re-time penalty charges is more than buying a brand new ticket. However, if AirAsia re-time your flight, then we can re-plan our trip and then called AirAsia to reschedule it. This is FREE of charge because it is AirAsia make the mistake.

But now this FREE of charge thing is not free actually. Recently I have a case which AirAsia re-time my flight from Bali back to KL with an arrival time of 0:20am. I have no other choice than to change the flight to an earlier one.

I sought the assistance of the "Live Help" but failed miserably. The reason is unknown, but I guess the main reason is because the "Live Help" is free at the moment. If one day, the "Live Help" is chargeable, I think "Live Help" can also do everything.

At the end I called 600 85 9999 (Premium Line RM1.95/minute) to change the flight. The line was connected immediately after I made the call but no one other than the machine was talking to me – all stuff are busy at the moment…

After waiting for 5 minutes, someone attended to me. I spent 5 more minutes (total 10 minutes) to reschedule the flight. You see, RM 20 is gone! - from my pocket to AirAsia.

This is how AirAsia is squeezing our money in the name of “CHEAP” and “FREE” flight.

See you next post :-)

Day +1468 : Buffet dinner at Le Meridien

I am fine today.

I had a buffet dinner last evening at Le Meridien hotel, KL Central with Richard and some other friends. Le Meridien, situated next to Hilton hotel are mirror image of each other and in fact, they are sharing the same swimming hotel.

It is 5 star hotel. The buffet dinner during weekend is costing RM108++ per person; RM10 more expensive than weekdays.

Since I had a very heavy lunch yesterday, so I really couldn't eat much.

I still prefer Saisaki or Shogun Japanese buffet over this one but one reason that one must choose to dine here is because of its environment where you can truly relax and talk. Saisaki or Shogun is too noisy.
