Day +1489 : Three years' jail term for Father of Detoxification

I am fine today.

I learned from Sin Chew Daily that the Father of Detoxification was sentenced to three years' jail term for fraudulence.

I blogged about him more than a thousand days ago when he was charged. The legal process has been lengthly to arrive at the sentence.

The related blog entries that I have posted were as follow:
It is a pity that one with such a talent shall end up in the jail. This should serve as a warning to those who practices the same.

Day +1047 : Assuming the role of God? (3)

I am fine. Continue from yesterday…

I read an article that explained why many who died of A1 (H1N1) were strong youth and adult, not from weaker group like children and senior citizen. The argument is that strong youth and adult are having an immune system that is too strong which causes damages to the lung cells that are infected by the virus. This is literally equal to overdose. I scan the article for your reference.

The article. Click to have a larger view
This article brings a strong message that strong is not necessary the better! "Just nice" is the best. We are the creation of God, and under normal circumstances, our immune system should work well - in balance condition. In other words, our immune system is neither too strong, nor too weak.

Tempering this balance condition through health products may bring undesirable result, one that causes casualties in A1 (H1N1) for example. In short, too strong an immune system can be fatal.

I came across some products that claim to contain certain hormone that brings longevity or products that have anti-aging effect. After doing some research, I found out that the hormone is only one of the factors that affect aging. Tempering a single factor might causes the body goes out of balance and brings undesirable result. Growing tumor is one of the possible outcomes.

I see aging as part of the design so that every part of the body ages in sync to avoid health problem. There is no point of remaining young with tumor, isn't it?

In conclusion, never assume the role of God by tempering what He has put in place unless it is necessary:-)

Day +1046 : Assuming the role of God? (2)

I am fine. Continue from yesterday…

The result of the transplant is a change of blood to my sister's in my body and since our immune system is provided by the blood as one of its functions, effectively, I got a brand new immune system. But the new immune system is not exactly the same as my sister's, so it may fails to recognize some of my organs and starts to attack them. This is what we called graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

The main challenge after the bone marrow transplant is the management of GVHD. Whenever there is sign of GVHD, the patients' immune system have to be suppressed through certain medication to avoid organ damages. On the other hand, suppressing the immune system too much defeat the purposes of transplant as the immune system might become too weak to clear the remaining cancer cells in the body. Therefore, this is a game of balance. A good haematologist must be a good game player in this field.

I am "fortunate" enough to have both acute and chronic GVHD, therefore, my immune system needs to be suppressed by taking immunosuppressive drugs such as Prednisolon (steroid) and Ciclosporin. With this, I found a very good and friendly reason to turn down any products that offer a boost to immune system :-)

However, it is most likely that only I and a few others who went through organ transplant could make use of the above reason.

Day +1045 : Assuming the role of God? (1)

I am fine today.

It is very often that we are approached by multi-level marketing agents who market health products to us. They always try all means to convince us to buy and consume the products. And it is sometime quite hard for us to turn down their offer, not because we are convinced that the products are good, but worried that rejecting them would bring undesirable repercussions to our relationship.

Many of them would say that their products work on a wide spectrum of health issues, and some of them even attempt to impart the impression of magic cure of their products. This claim is normally "substantiated" through many testimonies.

We ask them the reason that makes the product so effective, the argument given is almost the same - it boosts our immune system. But do we really need to boost our immune system?

I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, which is a blood disorder. In order to increase the chance of a cure, a stem cells transplant (bone marrow transplant) is needed. Our bone marrow manufactures our blood based on Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), and the transplant process destroyed all HSCs through strong chemotherapy first, and then infused others' HSCs (in my case my sister's) into the body. And these new HSCs are smart enough to found their home in the bone marrow and start to manufacture blood, but this time, based on the new HSCs.

Day +781 : Cancer is Not a Death Sentence (4)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

A clinical trial does not report the success stories only, it also capture the failure cases. To determine that a product or approach works, the failure is as important as success. Since testimonies only tell the success stories, we won’t be able to find out the success rate of a treatment. We definitely don’t want to choose a treatment that is successful in one patient, but fail in 999 patients. This gives a success rate of 0.1% only.

If we tell cancer patients that Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC) can achieve magic cure to their disease and ask them to take it everyday. Sooner or later, someone will tell you testimony how KFC cures them.

Next time, if someone boasts the effectiveness of a product or a therapy with amazing testimonies, don’t believe it. Ask for published clinical trial result instead.

Back to the “Cancer is not a death sentence” email, those who are responsible might reap the same fate as the father of detoxification if someone brought a case against them.

Day +780 : Cancer is Not a Death Sentence (3)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

A Leukaemia friend in UH told me a story about a product called Transfer Factor. If I were not mistaken, the product is sold by a multi-level company called 4Life. An agent from the company visited me and introduced to me the product while I was doing chemotherapy in UH. He was quite professional as he didn’t try to convince me that the product could work as a magic cure.

The Leukaemia friend told me that a patient from Sabah was receiving treatment in UH hematology in August 2006. His condition improved amazingly after taking Transfer Factor. Many patients in the ward were very excited about this at that time. And many of them started to take the product. However, no one was cured and the patient from Sabah passed away in December in the same year. But a very “powerful” testimony which described the situation in August 2006 might be used to make people believe that the product cures Leukaemia or cancers.

In order to prove that an approach or product works, a proper clinical trial must be done and the result published in an authoritative journal. Since a paper has to go through a stringent peer review process before it is accepted for publication, the likeliness of fraud or manipulation of trial result is significantly reduced. The author of the paper is subjected to legal action if he/she was found to fabricate research findings.

One example of well known research fraud was related to a South Korea stem-cell scientist, Professor Hwang Woo-Suk, who published the results of his research in two papers in the scientific journal Nature with fabricated result. What happened to him?

On May 12, 2006, Hwang was "indicted on embezzlement and bioethics law violations linked to faked stem cell research." Korea Times reported on June 10, 2007 that "The university expelled him and the government rescinded its financial and legal support. [Wikipedia]

He could spend as much as ten years in jail if convicted.

Day +779 : Cancer is Not a Death Sentence (2)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

It is very true that cancer is not a death sentence, but the content of the email is very misleading and irresponsible. It literally says that Dr. Lynn Tan’s Detoxification Rejuvenation is the RIGHT therapy to cancer because it makes your body heal itself. Not only this, it “dangerously” encouraged people to forward the mail to friends who are diagnosed with cancer.

A desperate cancer patient might treat this alternative therapy as his/her magic cure and thus delay the proper treatment, just like those who initiated the legal case against the father of detoxification. In fact, given a choice, I rather believe that this is true than going through the risky conventional treatment. But the question we need to ask is whether the approach works.

Given a testimony at particular instance, such as the one attached in the email, does not necessary reflect the effectiveness of the therapy. A cure can only be proclaimed if a cancer patient does not experience any elapse within 5 years upon treatment.

In addtion to this, a patient’s condition might fluctuate, and we can’t simply selectively capture the good time and use it as propaganda to lure people believing that the therapy works.

Day +778 : Cancer is Not a Death Sentence (1)

I am fine today.

Further to my post yesterday regarding the father of detoxification, I would like to talk about a local “expert” who also specializes on detoxification. This expert markets her approach and products through a multi-level marketing company.

I received the following email from the company on 11 July, 2008.

Dear Friends,

Here is a very informative article on how Theresa overcame her cancer without having to go through the ordeal of chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal treatment. There are many more like her story. Indeed cancer is NOT a death sentence. If you follow the RIGHT therapy, your body can heal itself.

If you would like to read more on such, please send me an email. I will be glad to email you Dr. Lynn Tan’s Detoxification and Rejuvenation booklet and other relevant materials.

If you know of friends who have been diagnosed with cancer and are in a dilemma, please forward them this article.

Keep healthy.

Regards

Day +777 : Two years and six months jail term for you, father of detoxification

I am fine today.

I blogged about the once famous father of detoxification one year ago in the following blog entries:

The court sentenced him to two years and six months jail term not long ago. The relevant news in Chinese is as follow:

Day +693 : Is raw food diet the best?

I am fine today.

I came across an article on Sin Chew Daily today that said that raw food diet is not necessary the best.

I was advised by someone to eat raw vegetable or take raw vegetable juice after I was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Someone even advised me to have raw vegetable juice as my main diet during my first chemotherapy. This is in fact a very dangerous advice as consuming raw vegetable juice exposes the patient who is weak in immunity during chemotherapy to infection.

If someone proposes you to convert to raw food diet, do have a second thought. An article on The New York Times talking about the best way to cook the vegetables mentioned a recent research on raw food diet.

“Surprisingly, raw and plain vegetables are not always best. In The British Journal of Nutrition next month, researchers will report a study involving 198 Germans who strictly adhered to a raw food diet, meaning that 95 percent of their total food intake came from raw food. They had normal levels of vitamin A and relatively high levels of beta carotene.

But they fell short when it came to lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes and other red-pigmented vegetables that is one of the most potent antioxidants. Nearly 80 percent of them had plasma lycopene levels below average.

“There is a misperception that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a nutrition researcher and professor of internal medicine in the medical oncology division at Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, a lot of times a little bit of cooking and a little bit of processing actually can be helpful.””

The whole article can be read here, and the Sin Chew Daily's article is attached below.

Day +672 : Vision-K Vitamin (2)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

I have a tip for you to handle the direct-sale “specialists” who always show you a lot of testimonies to guarantee that their products would work. Just tell them to give you the product in advance for you to consume for a few months or until the expected result is achieved. If the product really works as they claimed, than you pay them double the original price. It still worth to pay them double if it really works as claimed considering the high medical cost and the harmful effect of artificial drugs. But if the product doesn’t work as claimed; we don’t need to pay them anything.

This arrangement provides a good opportunity for the “specialist” to prove that their product is working and at the same time for them to achieve double reward.

If you propose this to them, I believe most of the “specialist” will “run away” from you because they know that it is very unlikely that the product will work as what they claimed. In order to avoid losing money because the product does not work, the best way is to “escape” from a tough customer like you.

Any direct-sale agent who has full confident in their product should accept the proposal; if not, they are bluffing :-)

Day +671 : Vision-K Vitamin (1)

I am fine today.

I would like to tell a story from my brother Richard.

Can Vision-K vitamin cure the lazy eye?? If you have any disease that can’t be handled by your doctor, don’t worry; look for direct-sale "specialists". They definitely have some magic weapons(法宝) that fit all your needs.

Dennis (Richard’s eldest son) was diagnosed with lazy eye about 5 months ago. He is now under intensive treatment in which he needs to do patching exercise for 6 hours a day. He might need to do the exercise as long as one year to correct the problem.

A direct-sale agent convinced my wife to purchase a product which the agent claimed to be able to cure lazy eye. And not only lazy eye that it can cure, it is also an effective remedy for Astigmatism(san guan) and short-sightedness. Don’t believe? The agent will prove the effectiveness of the product with many real testimonies. A bottle of the product costs RM126.

Lazy eye happens because the muscle of one of the eyes fails to function properly. However, one still can have quite good vision through the other eye which functions well. So far the only way to train the muscle of the problematic eye is to patch the “good” eye, forcing the brain to send the signal to the lazy eye. This will force the lazy eye to become “hardworking” eye after a period of consistent eye patching exercise.

I am very doubtful that this Vision-K vitamin is able to force the brain to send signal to the lazy eye. If this is indeed the case, maybe you can consult the direct-sale “specialist” to prescript the product for the lazy one (may be you or your children) who are lazy to work, to study, to do homework, to attend cell group… After that, every parts of your body will be very hardworking :-)

Day +625 : Health food does not give magic cure

I am fine today.

A filial son was misled by a multi-level marketing (MLM) company that health food could cure his father but the outcome turn out to be otherwise.

He replaced the drug presribed by doctor with health food, believing it could cure his father, but his father passed away later. Ather he regreted very much and then approached MCA's Michael Chong (张天赐) to expose his story to the public, hoping that people will be aware that health food does not give magic cure as claimed by MLM company.

Beware if someone tell you that their products can cure all diseases. Always ask for proper scientific research report and clinical trial to make sure they do not overstate the benefit of their product; else it might cause serious problem to your health and wealth.

Day +553 : “I am a lawyer! Do you think I can get cheated so easily?” (3)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

A quote from the Wikipedia about the health benefit claims of Xango juice :

“Marketing materials used to promote mangosteen juice indicate more than 20 human health benefits, among which are "anti-inflammatory," "anti-microbial," "anti-fungal," "anti-viral," "anti-cancer," "anti-ulcer," "anti-hepatotoxic," "anti-rhinoviral," and "anti-allergic"[20]. Promotional literature for the product cites antioxidants from the inedible rind of the fruit as providing health benefits. None of these claims, however, has scientific proof established by peer-reviewed research and human clinical trials, as discussed below.

In mid-2005, the American Cancer Society profile of mangosteen juice said that there was no evidence that any part of the fruit is effective as a treatment for cancer in humans, but preliminary laboratory studies showed some promise for treating acne. The profile mentioned laboratory studies indicating need for further research [21].

On its website, after stating that "Research shows xanthones (a component of XanGo juice) possess potent antioxidant properties that may help maintain intestinal health, strengthen the immune system, neutralize free radicals, help support cartilage and joint function, and promote a healthy seasonal respiratory system", the company adds this disclaimer as a footnote: "These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease"[22].

The company's scientific advisor, David A. Morton, PhD[23][24](whose brothers, Joe and Gordon, helped found the company[25]), stated in 2006 there is "emerging evidence that mangosteen has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties"[23], yet acknowledged the only study of humans consuming mangosteen juice was conducted as a test of dysentery therapy in Singapore in 1932[26][23]. "I don’t think there are plans to study mangosteen in humans in the near future," Dr. Morton said in 2006, because "there’s much too much that still needs to be studied in the lab"[23].

In 2007, the Mayo Clinic stated there was no evidence in humans that mangosteen juice had anti-inflammatory activity[27].”

You can read the whole article here.

In 2006, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned Xango about their health claims, and now they display on their website the statement, “*These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” But strangely enough, what Xango agents say is totally different from the statement. I believe they just put the statement to avoid running into trouble with FDA.

In fact, there was a Xango agent visiting me while I was still doing my chemotherapy. I didn’t take the juice but introduced it to a Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) patient instead. The patient’s husband purchased a few boxes of the juice for her but the juice failed miserably on her. I blogged about this on my blog Day +202, and you can read it here.

I hope this post give you an idea on how you should handle MLM agents who claim that their product could bring magic cure to you.

If it just happens that you are the agent, don’t be angry, just forget about everything that I write by taking high dose of health products :-) It should cure your angriness.

Day +552 : “I am a lawyer! Do you think I can get cheated so easily?” (2)

I am fine today. Continue from yesterday…

Very often, MLM companies use doctors or Nobel Prize winners to “fool” people believing that their product works. “He is a doctor!” or “He is a Nobel Prize winner!” and "They know more than you." and "They can’t be wrong." But the question is whether the majority of doctors recommending the product?

Sometime ago, a friend showed me a book about nutrition recommended by a MLM company. After I expressed reservation about the book, he reminded me that it was written by a doctor. I told him we should not believe something that was proposed by a doctor or some doctors, we need to take into account the view of majority, and most importantly, whatever proposed need to be backed by well researched publications; else we do not need to be so serious about it :-)

The lawyer said that research on rats showed that the Xanthone, the most important component in the Xango juice, suppressed the growth of cancer. I told him human and rat is different.

“They are 80% the same!” he affirmed me.

The first question is who tell him this, and the second question is even if we are 80% the same, how do we know Xanthone will have the same effect on human body? Even the same drug will have different reaction on human, how can we assume that something work on rats must work equally well on human?

Why not do a proper trial on human? After all it is not too difficult to carry out the trial, isn’t it? It is just a matter of drinking extremely expensive fruit juice only. I believe it is not that they don’t want to perform the trial, but they know for certain that the trial result would contradict to what they claim, and they will be out of business.

Day +551 : “I am a lawyer! Do you think I can get cheated so easily?” (1)

I am fine today.

A lawyer came to my office today to introduce me the Xango juice – a mangosteen juice marketed by the US based multi-level marketing(MLM) company called Xango, LLC.

He showed me a brochure with a lot of testimonies about the juice. Like most MLM health products, the brochure tends to impose an impression on the reader that the juice could eradicate all health problems and cure all diseases – so called magic cure.

I told him there is no way for me to accept testimonies as evident that a product works as claimed. This is because testimonies only tell us the success stories of the product, and even this, there is also no way for us to substantiate whether they are true. In order for us to assess the product, the failure stories are as important as the success stories. Therefore, published clinical trial result in renowned journal with peer review is very important. Unfortunately, not a single MLM company could provide this, including Xango.

If I give Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to 100 patients who are undergoing cancer treatment everyday and tell them this special KFC is very expensive and contains very “powerful” ingredient that could cure their diseases. I am very sure in the end of their treatment, some patients will be giving testimonies that KFC improves their condition or even cures their diseases :-) This is why we have to be very careful with testimonies.

When the lawyer felt that it was extremely difficult to convince me to take the juice, he started to become impatient.

“I am a lawyer! Do you think I can get cheated so easily?” he questioned.

“I don’t care who you are – lawyer, doctor, even Nobel Prize winner. Convince me with clinical trial report, not who you are,” I replied.

Day +540 : I am 6 years younger than me?

I am fine today.

I visited an interesting booth that measured one's health condition using two apparatus : Omron's KaradaScan and Pharmanex's Biophotonic Scanner.

KaradaScan is body composition monitor. It displays body weight, the levels of skeletal muscle, body fat and visceral fat, basal metabolism, BMI (body mass index), visceral fat rate, and body age.

The Biophotonic Scanner measures the stable level of carotenoid antioxidants in the skin and generating the skin Carotenoid Score.

Despite going through all those aggresive cancer treatments such as chemotherapies and bone marrow transplant, the KaradaScan showed that my body age was 6 years younger than my actual age. My real age is 40 years old, and my official age is 38 years old. The KaradaScan measured my body age as 34 years old only :-) The guy who did the scanning said that I "untung(earn)" 6 years.

The Biophotonic Scanner gave my Skin Carotenoid Score a reading of 42,000 (green zone) which was near the optimal end (blue zone). Most Malaysians are on the orange zone which is on the "weak" end. Your can refer to the report below to have an understanding on how to interpret the result. They told me that I scored the second highest in this test. My wife scored exactly the same Skin Carotenoid Score as me :-)

One thing pondering me is why such a healthy body developed cancer. Not only this, I met a lot of Leukaemia patients who told me that they were pretty wrong and healthy before getting diagnosed with the disease. May be unlike other cancers, Leukaemia is for the healthy one :-)

Day +504 : Drinking too much water can be fatal too!

I am fine today.

A lady who experienced mild high blood pressure believed that drinking a lot of water could bring her blood pressure down. After consuming 7 liter of water continuously for 3 months, she fell unconscious and developed permanent blindness.

Never listen to those people especially multi-level marketing(MLM) agent who claims that their product is natural, and thus “the more you consume, the better you are”. This is definitely not the case. For example, when we consume a product too much, our body needs to do extra work to dispose it no matter how superior the product is, and this certainly put extra burden on our organs. In the long run, organs failure are inevitable. So we should rephrase the “the more you consume, the better you are” to “the more you consume, the better I am”, because the more you spend, the more profit the MLM agent will get :-)

A specialist told me he came across a few patients whose liver was damaged due to spirulina overdose. Many claim that spirulina is a good agent for liver detoxification, but consuming too much of it ends up in liver damage :-(

Beware of those who claim their product is of the “the more you consume, the better you are” type. Just applying a little bit of common sense: even drinking too much water can be fatal, what more to say their product?

I attached the article regarding “water poisoning” for your reference. Click on the article to have a larger view.

Day +499 : A RM 1500 anion cloth

I am fine today.

My cousin forwarded an article regarding negative ion or anion clothing to me a few months ago. She asked for my opinion regarding this type of wonderful clothing which claimed to be able to eradicate all our health problems. This is another promise of miracle cure! I advised her to be very careful in dealing with any product that promises miracle cure.

What are so great about negative ion? The following information regarding the benefits of negative ions is taken from dress-to-cure website.

“ The main advantages of negative ions for human body include cleansing of the blood, enhancement of the immune system, activation of cells, and adjustment of the autonomous nervous system. The interaction between negative ion and human body is part of science of electromedicine, or electromagnetic healing, or bioelectromagnetic healing. When negative ions have effects on the body, the potassium and magnesium in the blood will transfer into cells. Potassium contains a substance which can alleviate pain in cells, help fight infection, and promote wound recovery.”

A few days ago, my brother-in-law showed me his RM1500 anion cloth that he purchased during his recent trip to Sarawak. One of his sisters introduced and sold him the cloth. He purchased two with a total worth of RM3000 – one for himself and another one for my sister. Now they wear anion cloth as pajamas every day :-)

They also lent me a pair of anion elbow supporters :-) I could feel some pain along some blood vessels on my both hands when my bend my arm. Doctor said this could be due to the hardening of my blood vessels due to chemotherapy drugs. If the anion cloth is really as effective as claimed, it should “de-harden” my blood vessel :-)

Though it is too good to be true, I still wear the supporters every night, and who knows it works :-)

Day +449 : American Global University is a bogus university (3)

I am fine today. I would like to finish off this long talk about the bogus university. I hope that you learn something from here and always give a second thought on the teachings by those health teachers with Ph.D. in medical studies.

The "father of detoxification" showed his Ph.D. certificate and transcript on his website at http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/lin-kuangchang/article?mid=408&prev=-1&next=400 and deduce from the fact that since his certificate and transcript are real, then his degree is real too.

I believe no one will doubt whether the certificate and transcript are real. Whether these papers are real in fact is not a main issue. The important thing is whether the qualification stated on the paper is up to minimum standard. What I can say is "Yes, it is real – a real bogus qualification" .

The certificate.

The transcript.
