The chairman of the seminary council, Professor Dr. Tan Chong Tin, came to brief us two weeks ago on the latest finding of the outbreak that effected almost all students and staff who went to a retreat in Pangkor in the beginning of the year.
He said the researcher found a parasite called Sarcocystis on two of the three sample muscle taken from three students. Phylogenetic analysis of the parasite suggests a snake as its probable definitive host. Ξ€here are more than 100 species of the parasite. So far, less than 100 cases of human disease has been reported. But at a single instance, the seminary contributed 90 new cases.
The outbreak was probably due to consumption of food or drinks contaminated by snake, rats droppings for droppings from other animals. That means, the problem lies in the food provided by the resort :-(
As the disease resulted from the parasite is very hard to diagnose, the experience gained by the medical team through this outbreak provides new understanding of the disease caused by the parasite and this certainly contributed to new medical knowledge.
